What cookies are

Specifically, a cookie is a small text file that a website saves to your device — phone, tablet, or computer — to remember information about your visit. Some cookies keep a site running at all. Others measure how visitors use the site, remember your preferences, or carry information between pages.

How we use cookies

Overall, we use only a small number of cookies. Most exist to keep the site working as expected. One set measures how the site is used. A few come from the plugins that provide accessibility features and dark-mode support.

In particular, the site does not use cookies for advertising, profiling, or commercial tracking of any kind.

Strictly necessary cookies

These cookies keep the site functioning — for example, by remembering that you have dismissed the consent banner. Under UK PECR rules they do not need your consent, but we list them here so you can see what they do.

wp-settings-* — set by WordPress, only for logged-in administrators. Stores editor preferences. Lifetime: 12 months.
ufw_status_[id] — set by the Ultimate Floating Widgets plugin, which hosts the dark-mode controller. Records whether you have manually opened or closed the floating panel so it stays in the position you left it. Lifetime: session.

Preference storage

Additionally, the site uses WP Dark Mode Pro to remember a small number of viewing preferences. The plugin’s frontend controller — the floating widget in the bottom-left corner of every page — lets you switch the site between light and dark mode and adjust text size. Your choices are saved as browser cookies under the wp-dark-mode- prefix.

wp-dark-mode-device, wp-dark-mode-timezone — store your device type and timezone to calibrate display settings.

These cookies do not track you across other sites, do not contain any personal identifier, and are not shared with third parties. You can clear them at any time through your browser settings; doing so resets the widget to its defaults.

Analytics cookies

We use Google Analytics through the Site Kit by Google plugin to understand how people find and use the site. Analytics cookies only run with your consent — that is, when you accept analytics through the consent banner.

In fact, Google Analytics returns anonymised, aggregated data to us. We do not see your IP address, and we do not link analytics data to any other information we hold about you. Google’s description of GA4 cookies covers the full technical detail.

The site also uses Jetpack Statistics for basic page-view counts, provided by Automattic Inc. Jetpack Statistics does not set any cookies in your browser — it uses server-side analytics only. Automattic’s privacy policy covers how this data is handled.

You can refuse analytics cookies through the consent banner on your first visit. You can change your mind at any time — see “How to change your consent” below.

Marketing cookies

We don’t use marketing cookies on this site. We don’t run advertising, we don’t share data with ad networks, and we don’t track visitors across other sites.

You may still see a “Marketing” category in the consent banner. The category is there as a precaution, so that if any future plugin or integration tries to set marketing cookies, they are blocked by default until you opt in.

Third-party content

Some pages may embed content from external services. Examples include a video, a map, or a social-media post. Embedded content can set its own cookies from the third-party service. That service’s cookie policy applies, not ours.

In general, we minimise the use of third-party content. The site currently includes one such integration: a translation widget powered by Google Translate. The widget appears as a row of language flags and is completely inert unless you click one. When you actively select a language, your browser loads Google’s translation script from translate.google.com and Google processes the current page to return a translated version. As part of that process, Google may set a googtrans cookie in your browser to remember your language choice for the duration of your visit. Google’s privacy policy applies to how that cookie is used.

If we add further third-party embeds in future, we will update this cookie policy to disclose them.

How to control cookies

You can control or refuse cookies in several ways.

Through our consent banner. When the banner appears on your first visit, choose “Accept all” to allow every cookie listed, “Reject all” to block every non-essential cookie, or “Manage preferences” to choose category by category.

Through Google. You can opt out of Google Analytics across every site you visit by installing Google’s Analytics Opt-out browser add-on.

Use the “Manage cookies” tab — a small icon that stays visible in the corner of every page on both desktop and mobile. Click or tap it to reopen the consent options and toggle any category on or off.
Clear the cookies set by this site in your browser, then revisit. The consent banner will reappear on your next page load and you can choose again.

We will update this cookie policy when we add, change, or remove cookies on the site.
